The award honors the past and present greats of Australian journalism and is named after Lekenedy, a veteran criminal reporter who died in 2011.
Rocco Fazari, chairman of the Kennedy Foundation, said the striking areas of applicants submitting this year’s work made it difficult for the jury to select candidates in 34 categories.
“In a really big news year, the criteria for submission were extraordinary,” Fazari said.
“This year, the work of 70 judges was really cut out for them. The Kennedy Foundation is very grateful for their dedication and support.”

Earlier this year, reporter Kate Kelly was nominated for the June Andrews Award for Labor Relations Reporting at Wakuries mid-year. Her series on worker exploitation in Australian agriculture..
In particular, Kelly revealed that farmers are paying workers below the minimum wage and charging excessive accommodation costs.
Her recognition of her excellent reports was heated following the success of former TND political editor Samantha Maiden at the 2020 Walkley Awards.
The maiden got the Scoop of the Year For breaking the story of Prime Minister Scott Morrison spending his vacation in Hawaii during the worst wildfire season in Australia’s history.
Her report forced Morrison to apologize and influenced his approach to dealing with the pandemic a few months later.
