A train carrying about 350 passengers crashed into a truck, killing at least 36 people in the worst railroad disaster in Taiwan in decades.
At least 36 people were killed after the train derailed in a tunnel in eastern Taiwan on Friday.
A train full of about 350 passengers reportedly collided with a truck at what is said to be the worst railroad disaster on the island in at least 40 years.
Rescuers are still scrambling to reach those trapped inside.
According to the National Fire Department, an 8-car express train moved from Taipei to Taitung at around 9:30 am, picking up tourists at the beginning of a long weekend and getting off the railroad tracks north of Hualien in eastern Taiwan.

President Tsai Ing-wen’s office said he had ordered the hospital to prepare for a large number of casualties.
“In response to the train derailment in Hualien, Taiwan, our emergency services have been fully mobilized to rescue and assist affected passengers and rail staff,” she said in a post. Was twitter.

A photo published by the local news website UDN showed that the front of the train in the tunnel was crushed into a twisted mesh of metal.
Other images of the scene showed behind the yellow flatbed truck next to the train.
It was believed that while 61 passengers were being taken to the hospital, an additional 72 were still trapped inside the train.
Another live broadcast by UDN outside the tunnel showed at least two undamaged train cars, and rescue teams were helping passengers escape.
“I felt like there was a sudden and violent shock, and I noticed that I was lying on the floor,” an unidentified female survivor told the network.
“We broke the window and climbed up and down the train roof.”
The crash is expected to be one of the worst railroad accidents in Taiwan in recent decades.
The last major train derailment in Taiwan was in 2018, killing 18 people at the southern end of the same line.
In another crash in 1991, 30 passengers were killed and 112 were injured after two trains collided in Miaoli.
In 1981, a truck collided with a passenger train at a railroad crossing, killing 30 people after sending a coach across the Hsinchu Bridge.
