Colombo police arrested the current “Mrs. World” on Thursday for assaulting Flaca on stage, where she pulled the crown from the head of the new “Mrs. Sri Lanka.”
Caroline Julie pulled the crown from Pushpica de Silva minutes after being declared “Mrs. Sri Lanka 2020” at the Sunday Gala at the Neram Porkna Theater in Colombo.
Julie was last year’s “Mrs. Sri Lankan” and won the “Mrs. World” competition hosted by a California-based company.
Pushpika de Silva needed hospital treatment after the incident, seen in a stunned audience in a packed theater and a live social media audience.
“We have arrested Julie and (her fellow) Chula Manamendra on suspicion of assault and damage to Neram Porkna (theatre),” said Aziz Rohana, a senior police officer.
DeSilva told reporters outside Colombo’s Cinnamon Gardens police station Thursday that she was ready to withdraw the charges if Julie publicly apologized, but she refused.
“I tried to end this out of court, but she refused,” said De Silva. “I can forgive, but I can’t forget.”
There was no immediate comment from Julie or her lawyer.
A court hearing is likely to take place next week, and Julie and her associates, who crashed into the stage on Sunday, could be released on bail late Thursday, police sources said.
Julie claimed that De Silva was divorced and was not eligible for the prize.
Contestants must be married to qualify for the title. De Silva is away from her husband, but they are still legally married.
The organizers said Julie was claiming damages to the stage and behind-the-scenes dressing room where some mirrors were broken.
Julie has also been accused by the organizers of causing the event to be unpopular.
Pageant’s local franchise owner, Chandimal Jayasinge, said Julie’s actions were “deeply confused and deeply regretted.”
Social media calls are rising to strip Julie’s “Mrs. World” title, and one meme is calling on her to rebrand as “Mrs. Underworld.”
