Quarantine breacher jumped from ship off WA, swam ashore before going to backpackers: Police

A man on a carrier ship moored in a port in Western Australia allegedly jumped from the ship into the water and attempted to escape quarantine before landing and heading for a backpacker.

The 37-year-old man was a crew member of a bulk carrier anchored at the Port of Albany in the Great Southern region of the state on Thursday.

The crew was not allowed to land on land in Western Australia.

According to WA police, a Vietnamese man jumped into the water on Saturday and landed in violation of state COVID-19 regulations.
