Albert Pujols knows there is something left in the tank and wants to continue playing.Despite breaking the relationship with the Los Angeles Angels, the two World Series champions don’t seem to leave LA
Officially announced, Pujols’ games have been on the decline in the last few years, but that could be a resumption of play that Pujols deserves.
Pujols was worth $ 240 million in the final year of his 10-year contract with the Angels before things collapsed. The 10-time All-Star wasn’t keen on backing up, so the oldest player in the major chose to pack his bag and explore other options.
The three NLMVPs will earn $ 30 million this season. Once the Dodgers deal is officially announced, the team will pay Pujols only about $ 420,000, a proportionally distributed portion of the Major League Baseball minimum wage for the rest of the season. The angels pay the rest, Chicago Tribune report.
The angels could not fly with Pujols, and the slugger had no effect. He is fifth in Major League Baseball history, with 667 home runs and 3,253 hits, 13th, but hasn’t been affected by Pujols’ stints over the last 50 years.
Pujols decided to leave because he wanted to play more, not as a backup. However, the move to the Dodgers does not necessarily address that concern, and Los Angeles is expected to stick to veterans Max Muncy and Cody Bellinger. Therefore, what we expect from Pujols is to consider him a designated hitter in inter-league road games.
This is subject to change. Muncie can play other positions in the infield. In other words, Pujols may step up. Especially for left-handed pitchers.
When his new deal is signed, Pujols will be the fourth MVP winner in the Dodgers, joining Bellinger, Mookie Betts and Clayton Kershaw.
But after this season, Pujols’ future will be questioned again. Despite his age and dipping performance, perhaps helping another MLB title to win may be the perfect swan song for two World Series champions.
