Promising Young Woman leads change in ‘rape-revenge’ movies

The story of sexual assault in Hollywood is changing both on-screen and off-screen.

There is a long-standing genre of film dedicated to show that rape crimes have affected the victim’s father and that he is launching violent retaliation.

Modern directors move away from such depictions, and many films choose to complicate the simple morals of their predecessors.

However, these films are generally low-budget incidents and the screening of the films is limited. For example, it’s not the budget or star in the story about the father. photograph (2008) and Desire for death (2018).

With the success of the 2020s Promising young woman, Revisionist films like these could reach a larger audience and be praised by critics.

This is a refreshing pace change in a movie-filled genre that portrays rape as an attack on his father’s honor.

Father’s revenge

The rape and revenge movie genre has a fairly sneaky reputation and calls images of abused and traumatized women who are taking violent revenge on attackers, as follows: I spit on your grave (1978).

These early films became prominent in the 1970s, relying heavily on the impact of the brutal rape scene, followed by even greater impact of the victim’s sadistic revenge.

However, entries in this genre did not necessarily focus on the victim’s reaction.

In many cases, filmmakers have found more mainstream success when the avenger is the father of the victim.

The film that seems to have highlighted this genre was Ingmar Bergman’s 1961 Academy Award-winning film. Virgin fountain..

Virgin fountain The focus is on the pain of the father, not the presence of the daughter.

Virgin fountain It begins with the story of the virgin virgin Karin (Birgitta Petterson), but after rape and murder, the focus shifts to his distraught father Torre (Max von Sydow).

In 1972, movie fan Wes Craven became much more violent. Last house on the leftIt takes only a moment to focus on the pain and humiliation of Mali (Sandra Peabody). Then enjoy the sadistic revenge that parents attack the murderer.

Unlike Mali and Karin, Carol (Kathleen Tolan) Wisdom of deathh (1974) survived her assault, but the film ignores her pain.

instead of, Desire for death It focuses on her stoic father Paul (Charles Bronson) and her whimsical husband Jack (Steven Keats).

Jack feels sad when he hands Carol, a catatonia, to the care of a mental hospital, and Paul feels sad about a little criminal in New York City.

Death Wish, Daughter’s rape must be revenge over and over again.

First wearing socks full of penny, then with a gun, former pacifist Paul became a powerful deterrent to potential criminals, a phenomenal amount of crime in his city. Only reduce.

The film has four sequels with almost the same plot and different qualities (1985s). Death Wish 3It’s a lot of fun for Curcy to protect an apartment full of seniors) and a 2018 remake starring Bruce Willis.

Murder plan

I’ve seen unhealthy numbers in these movies, but perhaps the most exemplary of this tradition photograph..

Liam Neeson plays former Green Berets Bryan Mills, who started the film in an attempt to rebuild his relationship with his 17-year-old daughter Kim (Maggie Grace).

Brian was horrified when Kim wanted to visit Paris with only his irresponsible friend Amanda (Katie Cassidy).

He reluctantly agrees, but his hesitation is substantiated when Kim and Amanda are kidnapped by the Albanian sex trafficking ring.

Brian travels to Paris and tortures all Albanians available. In one of the most upset scenes, he electrocuted information from mid-career gang member Marko (Arben Bajraktaraj).

Once Brian has what he needs, he turns on the lights and goes outside, gradually electrocuting Marco.

Ultimately, Brian fulfills his father’s responsibilities by killing everyone and rescuing Kim.

What women need

photograph It ends when Kim returns to America with Brian, but her trials don’t seem to have changed at all. She is as cheerful as the opening scene.

Of course she is: this is not her story. It’s Brian’s story, and he got exactly what he wanted. Kim is safe and his authority as a father is no longer an issue.

Even rape and revenge films starring women rarely focus on her inner journey, instead introducing her incredible violence. But the new iteration of rape revenge revolves around the protagonist’s path from trauma to healing.

Natalia Leyte 2017 movie MFA (Released in Australia Revenge artist) Take the audience to the experience of the main character, Noel (Franchesca Eastwood). Noel learns that violent revenge can be catharsis, but does not heal her trauma.

Finally, women came to manage their stories.
Promising young woman The focus is on the protagonist’s inability to deal with the suicide of a friend after sexual assault.

HBO / BBC series I may destroy you After a traumatic assault, chase a woman who is doing her best to restore her life.

More and more stories are displayed on the screen, focusing on what the rape victim needs, not who the father wants to hit.

This is an industry that recognizes that when a woman is raped, it is a tragedy that she is a human being, not because she is a daughter.
