On Tuesday, the Mexican president promised a detailed investigation to find the person responsible for at least 23 deaths in the collapse of the elevated subway with a history of problems.
The pledge came when the capital paramedics worked on Monday night to recover the bodies of the victims still trapped in the wreckage of a carriage that plunged into the ground.
Dozens of people were injured in the accident. This is one of the worst accidents in history that hit the Mexico City subway, questioning the standards for building and maintaining networks used by millions of people every day.
President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said at a daily press conference that “a thorough investigation will be conducted … to find out the truth” and an independent international expert assists the prosecutor’s investigation. Then he added.
“We can’t get into speculation and without evidence we can’t blame the perpetrators,” he added.
From 2006 to 2012, the city’s newest metroline was built while Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebral, a close ally of Lopez Obrador, was the mayor of the capital.
“For me, I’ve made the authorities completely free to use,” said Evrad, who is considered one of the ruling party candidates for the 2024 presidential election.
In 2014, Evlard’s successor, Miguel Angel Mansera, shut down at 12 stations on the same subway line after wear on rail and train wheels was detected.
Subsequent investigations concluded that there was a problem with the design, operation and maintenance of the track.
From the elevated subway to the south of the capital, twisted cables were seen entwined and carriages hanging.
Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico City told reporters that some of the 23 dead were minors.
She added that four of the victims were still on the train.
Nearly 80 people were treated in the hospital after the dramatic accident.
Previously, anxious relatives gathered at the scene waiting for news of people who seemed to be on the train.
One man said his brother was among the trapped people.
“He came with his wife and they managed to get her out, but he was crushed there and we knew nothing,” he said.
Dozens of paramedics were seen trying to rescue the victims from the carriage.
Work had to be interrupted due to concerns that the wreckage might be too unstable, but later resumed with the help of a crane.
The car was trapped under the rubble, but the people inside managed to survive, Shainbaum said.
She promised a structural inspection of the affected subway line, but it remained closed and promised to fully investigate the cause of the accident.
“Citizens have the right to know the truth,” said Shane Baum, who is also seen as a ruling party candidate for the 2024 presidential vote.
A man, José Martinez, told reporters that he had a miraculous escape because he couldn’t quit his job in time for the unlucky train.
“I was saved in about 15 minutes. It’s good that nothing happened,” he said.
Ricardo de la Torre, who lives near Line 12 in Mexico City, said he was worried about the quality of the elevated train as the train rocked nearby buildings.
“By that simple fact, we know that the structure is bad,” he said.
Fernando Espino, the leader of the subway union, told Mirenio’s television channel that engineers have already reported line failures on various occasions.
“It may have been a mistake. They didn’t take it seriously,” he added, adding that, unlike other subway lines, number 12 is maintained by an outside company.
The incident on Monday occurred more than a year after two subway trains collided in Mexico City, killing one and injuring about 40 in panicked passengers fleeing in heavy smoke.
In one of the worst accidents on the network in history, two subway trains collided with each other, killing 23 people and injuring 55 in October 1975.
