James Franklin Linked To USC

After the USC fired head football coach Clay Helton on Monday, it didn’t take long for an extensive list of potential candidates to fill the vacancy. One candidate who appears to have emerged as a potential front runner is James Franklin of Pennsylvania State University.

One source told sports radio station Dan Patrick that there was mutual interest between Franklin and USC. The news arrives the day after Franklin evades questions about the work of USC’s head coach.

Since replacing Bill O’Brien in 2014, Franklin has set a record of 62-28 at Pennsylvania State University. Prior to 4-5 in 2020, the Nittany Lions never fell below .500 under Franklin. From 2016 to 2019, Pennsylvania State University won two bowl games 42-11.

Franklin, 49, has no strong ties to USC and is not from the West Coast. Aboriginal people in Pennsylvania are associated with Maryland, Kansas State University, Green Bay Packers University, and Vanderbilt University.

In 2017, USC defeated Pennsylvania State University 52-49 in the Rose Bowl in the final second field goal. It was Helton’s biggest victory as a head coach.
