Israel temporarily stagnated on Thursday, and sirens rang to honor the Holocaust victims, stopping the morning hustle and bustle for two minutes at 10 am (Greenwich Mean Time 0700).
At the annual ritual, pedestrians froze on the spot, drivers stopped, and stood silently beside the car in honor of the 6 million Jews killed by the Nazis during World War II. ..
The ceremony took place nationwide, in contrast to last year when most monuments were held online only due to coronavirus regulations and the elderly in the slaughter were trapped indoors.
Israel, which has more than half of its population vaccinated, is now lifting some of its pandemic restrictions.
At the Holocaust Education Center in Jerusalem, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu redrawn similarities between the Nazi genocide and the threat facing the Jewish state from Iran’s nuclear weapons program.
Netanyahu argued that Israel would not be bound by a nuclear agreement between world powers and Iran if it allowed the Islamic Republic to develop nuclear weapons.
Discussions are underway in Vienna aimed at bailout the 2015 international agreement on Tehran’s nuclear program.
“The agreement with Iran, which paves the way for nuclear weapons, is by no means binding on us,” the Prime Minister said.
“During the Holocaust, we didn’t have the ability or sovereignty to protect ourselves,” Netanyahu added.
“Today we have a nation, a defensive power, and as a Jewish sovereign state, we have a complete and natural right to protect ourselves from our enemies.”
Israel has accused its great enemy, Iran, of trying to develop a nuclear weapon. Tehran claims that the nuclear program is essentially a private sector.
