India Bans Export Of Covid-19 Treatment Drug Remdesivir

India banned exports of remdesivir on Sunday as infectious diseases soared to daily highs and hospitals worked to increase demand for coronavirus treatments.

In vast countries, the number of cases has skyrocketed in recent weeks, with 152,000 new cases added and 13.3 million infections on Sunday.

The Ministry of Health said the surge in incidents led to a “surge in demand” for antiviral drugs.

“This demand could increase further in the next few days,” the ministry said in a statement, adding that an export ban would be implemented “until the situation improves.”

Remdesivir, manufactured by US pharmaceutical giant Gilead, was one of the first drugs to show relative prospects for faster recovery times in some Covid-19 patients.

However, according to a World Health Organization-sponsored study, the drug “had little or no effect” on Covid-19 mortality.

Last year, Gilead signed a license agreement with generic drug manufacturers based in India, Pakistan and Egypt to manufacture remdesivir for sale primarily in 127 low- and middle-income countries.

Seven companies in India, the world’s largest producer of generics, are licensed to manufacture remdesivir.

They have a monthly production capacity of up to 3.88 million injection doses, the ministry added.

The ban was taken as India’s wealthiest state, Maharashtra, which is the main cause of the outbreak, considered announcing a complete blockade as early as Monday.

India has avoided strict restrictions since last year, when the one-month national blockade, one of the toughest in the world, was gradually lifted for fear of destroying an already-hit economy. It was.

However, as the number of incidents continues to increase, local governments are imposing more and more restrictions, such as the Maharashtra weekend blockade and curfew.

The Prime Minister of India’s capital, Delhi, said on Sunday that his government was not in favor of the blockade, but would consider drastic measures once hospital beds began to run out.

He added that 65 percent of new Covid-19 patients were under 45 years of age.

Meanwhile, India, home of the world’s largest vaccine maker, has recently delayed the export of shots due to a surge, as some states have warned that inventories are running low.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a four-day “Vaccine Festival” on Sunday to launch a “second battle with Corona” to accelerate the slump in vaccination.
