A Cuban dissident artist who has been hospitalized in Havana since the weekend after a hunger strike appeared clearly healthy in a video released Tuesday.
Luis Manuel Otero Alcantara, 33, is the leader of the San Isidro Protest (MSI), an artist and intellectual who seeks freedom of speech and other rights in a communist state.
“The doctors were very professional and attentive and very connected at the human level,” said Otello Alcantara, wearing pajamas and sitting in a hospital bed.
He was hospitalized on Sunday on the eighth day of the hunger strike. He is going to protest the seizure of some of his work when he was arrested during a demonstration last month.
This video was posted on the Facebook page of Fran Martinez Galvez, who introduced himself as a doctor in charge of the care team at Calixto Garcia General Hospital, where Otello Alcantara was filmed.
“Since he was transferred to the hospital, I’ve received many messages accusing him of being an oppressor, a policeman … that’s wrong,” accompanies a video of both men relaxing and laughing. The text to say says.
“That’s why today I asked my patients to shoot this video together to show reality with the help of nurse Dorita,” the text says.
Members of the MSI group, and international human rights groups, have expressed concern about his health after Otello Alcantara was admitted to the hospital and there was no news about his condition.
The US embassy in Cuba called on Havana authorities to “protect his well-being in this difficult moment,” causing the anger of Cuban President Miguel Diaz Cannell.
On Monday, Diaz Cannell called U.S. comments “shameful,” saying Washington “condemned more than 11 million Cubans for hunger and shortage” through decades of blockades against the island nation. ..
