Cambodian Opposition Figure Slapped With 25-year Jail Sentence

According to court officials, Sam Rainsee, the representative of Cambodia’s exiled opposition, was sentenced to 25 years in absentia on Monday for plans to overthrow the influential Hun Sen administration.

Rainsy has been living in France since 2015 to avoid several other convicted prisons he says are politically motivated.

The latest ruling is related to his attempt to return home in 2019, government-friendly media Fresh News reported.

Lacy was convicted “in an (attempted) attack in Cambodia in 2019,” Phnom Penh City Court spokesman Y Lin told AFP and refused to give further details.

Officials said the court also deprived them of their right to vote and their right to run as candidates for election.

In a Twitter statement, Rainey said the conviction was “born of weakness and fear.”

“Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Sen is afraid of the risk of me returning to the political situation in Cambodia,” he wrote.

“Hun Sen is also afraid of the prospect of a free and fair election that will inevitably lead to the end of his dictatorship.”

Eight other opposition politicians, including Rainsy’s wife, were also sentenced to 20 to 22 years in prison in absentia.

Hun Sen is one of the longest-serving leaders in the world and has grasped power for 36 years in a way that critics include imprisoning political opponents and activists.

He said he regarded Rainsy’s planned return as a “coup attempt.”

Since the July 2018 elections, Cambodian authorities have stepped up arrests of former members of the disbanded opposition, human rights defenders, and dissenting opinions when Hun Sen’s party has won all parliamentary seats without credible opposition. did.

About 150 opposition figures and activists have been brought to large-scale trials for treason and sedition. Primarily because they shared their messages on social media platforms that help Rainsy attempt to enter the kingdom.

Rights groups have accused the trial of being a politically motivated fake.

Many opposition politicians have fled Cambodia for fear of arrest, but the country’s leading opposition leader, Kem Sokha, is facing another treason trial that has been postponed indefinitely since March last year.
