Brazil, Bolivia Get AstraZeneca Covid Jabs From India

Brazil announced on Wednesday that it would import AstraZeneca’s Covishield jab 2 million times from India in a global battle for coronavirus vaccines.

Inventories will be added to approximately 10 million doses of CoronaVac in China as Brazil prepares to launch a vaccination campaign this month.

The largest country in Latin America has been hit second by the pandemic in the world. This is because the new coronavirus has killed more than 204,000 of Brazil’s 212 million people.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Health, Brazil sent an airplane with a special freezer to India to obtain the AstraZeneca vaccine developed by British and Swedish pharmaceutical companies in collaboration with Oxford University.

The plane needs to return on Saturday-the day before Brazil’s Anvisa health regulators will announce whether Covishield and CoronaVac will be rolled out in a national vaccination campaign.

According to the ministry, vaccination could begin “up to five days after approval.”

“We will be vaccinated in January and Manaus will be the first to be vaccinated,” said Health Minister Eduardo Pazuero, referring to the city hit by the Amazon rainforest. It was.

In Manaus, where there was a ghostly scene of mass graves and corpses piled up in refrigerator cars last April, the medical system was once again saturated as Brazil fought the second wave of infection.

Brazil expects the Fiocrus Institute to produce another 210 million doses of AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine within the next few months.

Beijing has already sent 10.7 million CoronaVac doses, plus the supplies needed to deliver an additional 40 million doses locally.

More than 50 countries around the world have begun immunizing their populations, but efforts have begun slowly in Brazil.

On Tuesday, Brazil said CoronaVac was shown to be about 50% effective in trials.

The shot is at the heart of a political debate between President Jair Bolsonaro, who has repeatedly tried to discredit him, and Joan Doria, the governor of São Paulo, who supports it.

Doria is expected to challenge Bolsonaro in next year’s presidential election.

Neighboring Bolivia said Wednesday that it had signed a contract with the Indian Serum Institute for 5 million doses of AstraZeneca vaccine, in addition to 5.2 million doses of Sputnik V-jab already ordered from Russia.

With a population of 11.5 million, more than 9,450 coronaviruses have died since the epidemic began, hitting Latin America particularly hard.

The World Health Organization said earlier Wednesday that in the fight against the pandemic, there have been about 28 million vaccinations so far, primarily in the wealthiest countries in the world.

UN agencies warn that herd immunity, which is achieved only after certain thresholds of people have been vaccinated, is unlikely to be achieved this year.
