According to the government, the Australian defense minister was hospitalized for cardiovascular disease and was sick on Wednesday.
Linda Reynolds, who is currently involved in an investigation into a young employee’s alleged rape by a colleague in the parliamentary office, said she was being treated for an “existing medical condition.”
“As a precautionary measure, Minister Reynolds was admitted to Canberra Hospital this morning,” the statement read, adding that he would “take medical leave.”
Reynolds was scheduled to answer questions from National Press Club journalists late Wednesday, while a young staff member, Brittany Higgins, will file a formal complaint with police.
Questions were raised as to whether Reynolds responded appropriately to the alleged assault, and some critics asked her to resign.
Health Minister Greg Hunt rejected the proposal to ducking public surveillance, saying he was “desperate” to appear in Reynolds, but was forced to “passively decide not to do it.” ..
Reynolds is also at the center of fierce negotiations with the French submarine maker Navy as Australia seeks to move more production to land.
Group CEO Pierre Eric Pommellet is currently in Australia discussing the next steps in Australia’s largest defense transaction in history.
Defense Minister Brendan O’Connor misunderstood Congress about responding to the alleged rape and claimed to have taken his eyes off the ball, saying “there are serious questions about the minister’s capabilities.”
“She needs to focus on this major contract, this important contract for our national security,” he told Sky News.
Foreign Minister Marise Payne will tentatively address the defense portfolio.
