20 Dead, Dozens Hurt As Elevated Metro Collapses In Mexico

At least 20 people were killed and dozens injured in a train crash in the collapse of an elevated subway in the Mexican capital on Monday, officials said.

The carriage was seen hanging from the elevated due to a tangled twisted cable, with both ends facing the ground in a V-shape.

“Unfortunately, 20 people, including minors, have died so far,” Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum told reporters at the scene in the southern capital.

The city’s civil defense department said on Twitter that about 70 people were injured in a dramatic accident. This is one of the worst accidents that hit the Mexico City subway since its inception in 1969.

Security camera footage broadcast by local media showed the carriage plunging towards the ground.

Dozens of paramedics were seen trying to rescue the victims from the carriage.

However, I had to pause later because I was afraid that the wreckage might be too unstable.

“Rescue is currently suspended because the trains are so weak that the cranes are continuing,” said Shane Baum.

The car was trapped under the rubble, but the man inside the viaduct managed to survive, she said.

“Suddenly I saw the structure sway,” an unidentified witness told Mexican television network Televisionsa.

“When the dust cleared, we ran … to see if we could help. There was no scream. I don’t know if they were shocked,” she said. Added.

Some medical workers were seen taking away the injured on a stretcher.

According to Shainbaum, the victims were flooded with various hospitals in the city.

She said the accident occurred around 10 pm (Greenwich Mean Time 0300) when part of the elevated railroad track collapsed at Orivos Station.

Mexico City’s subway has 12 lines, carrying millions of passengers daily.

Line 12, where the accident occurred, was launched in October 2012 by the then Mayor of Marcelo Evrad (now the Minister of Foreign Affairs).

Ebrard wrote on Twitter and offered to cooperate in the investigation to establish the cause and responsibility for what he called a “terrible tragedy.”

In one of the worst accidents on the network, two subway trains collided with each other, killing 23 people and injuring 55 in October 1975.

A recent incident occurred more than a year after two subway trains collided in Mexico City, killing one and injuring about 40 as panicked passengers fled with thick smoke.

Social media footage showed a panic at the scene of the accident in the city center when the lights went out, the ventilation system was interrupted, and the station was filled with smoke.

A recent accident occurs when Mexico is struggling to deal with a coronavirus pandemic. The coronavirus pandemic has killed more than 217,000 people. This is one of the highest victims in the world.
